Welcome to my web page. I lived in Beaumont, Texas when I was first licensed as a Novice with the call KN5HWH in July 1957. Back then I worked a lot of CW with a homebrewed 6AG7 / 6L6 transmitter and a Hallicrafters S-38D receiver, using a long wire about 11 meters above the ground. The next year I upgraded to the Technician license and during my last two high school years and my early college days at Lamar University I was very active on 6 meters AM. In 1962 I upgraded to the General class license. In 1963 I moved to Austin, Texas to attend the University of Texas. While at UT I was active on HF SSB, mostly on 15 meters, and on 6 meter FM. I graduated in May 1965 and served my Naval Reserve active duty obligation as a radioman in the U.S. Navy.
Upon discharge from the Navy in August 1967 I returned to the University of Texas at Austin where I entered law school and worked nights as a dispatcher for the Austin Police Department. I received my law degree and was licensed to practice law in May 1970. I practiced law in Austin for nearly 30 years, including 11 years as a judge, raised a son and a daughter and was active in the Austin Amateur Radio Club.
In July 1999 I moved to Northern end of the Highland Lakes area of the Texas Hill Country and settled in the little town of Llano, Texas, becoming a semi-retired country lawyer. In August 2004 I finally got off my duff and upgraded to the Extra class license. In early 2007 I changed my call to W5LOG, my late father-in-law’s call sign. I am active in the Highland Lakes Amateur Radio Club’s ARES group. I work all HF bands with my favorites being 15 and 17 meters SSB and 20 meters PSK.
In July 2007 I will celebrate 50 years in ham radio. I look forward to a QSO with you. 73, Jim
